Smut by the Sea 2015 was another fabulous and fun event. Thanks to Victoria and Kev Blisse for organising. I think they got the balance between readings, workshops and performances during the day spot on.

The readings were all enjoyable and I’m always staggered at the variety of writing that comes under the umbrella of erotica. I chose to read from my story Maman Brigitte featuring a voodoo goddess descended from Irish slaves and set in 18th century St Domingue (Haiti) – thinking that, given the theme of my own workshop, I ought to read something in an historical setting. The highlights for me were Jacqueline Brocker, whose story was marvelous; Cameryn Moore, for the wonderful work she produces as street writing under extreme pressure and scary deadlines; Kiki DeLovely and Lisabet Sarei because, well, I’m just a sucker for an American accent really and Ashley Lister because, let’s face it, you can never have too much midget porn in your life!

The workshops (I’ll come to mine later) were excellent. Jennifer Denys covered the interesting folklore and history about werewolves and then took us on a journey to invent your own werewolf. Hm, somehow I ended up with an Alpha female werewolf…can’t think where that came from!

And it was fascinating to hear Cameryn Moore talk about her work as a phone sex worker and the different techniques that can be used both for real and for dialogue in stories.

The performances from Bea Noir and Blue Belle both added something hot and spicy into the mix. I had seen Bea Noir at a Taste of Smut so knew to expect something spectacular and she certainly delivered with a daring bed of nails dance. And I had to follow that!

The one disappointment of the day…there had been rumours Kev Blisse was going to do a striptease, but it never happened! Maybe that would have pushed the tolerance of Scarborough Library beyond breaking point.

Kinking up the Past

Then there was my own workshop, Kinking up the Past, helping people to find inspiration for sexy stories in historical settings. I brought along various documents and photographs as resources for the activities.

One of them was a receipt of Lady Jessica Sykes from a pawnbroker for pawning a diamond necklace and tiara in 1886. The idea of the exercise was to come up with a brief outline for a story based on the document. Everybody seemed to enter into the spirit of the thing with gusto. One group came up with a wacky idea involving time travel; Lady Jessica apparently being part of a criminal gang who’d carried out some kind of Hatton Gardens style heist, who then used a time machine to take her back to the Victorian period so she could cash in on the stolen diamonds! Brilliant and topical.

Phwoar, she is hot! Edwardian lady parachutist Dolly Shepherd

I introduced people to Dolly Shepherd, the amazing Edwardian lady parachutist, who inspired one of my stories. You can find out more about her at my blog here and about the Pickering Gala where she appeared here. It was a common gala and fairground attraction in the Edwardian period to go up in a hot air balloon and then descend by parachute…with no safety harness or helmet!! This led on to an exercise using photographs of Victorian characters and doing  a story outline that put the character into a sexy situation.

The full gallery of photosf I used is at the end of this blog. So, people who were at the workshop can see the images that others worked on whilst people who weren’t there might still like to have a go at the task and get some inspiration from the pictures.

The third activity started with the process of how I got to write a story that involved sex on top of an Anglo-Saxon burial mound and led to people choosing an historical period from a hat (well, an envelope actually) and finding a setting, characters, historical conflict, costume and social activity from the period. Janine Ashbless got to cheat because she picked out the Vikings and she used to do Viking re-enactments!

I enjoyed doing it and would like to thank everybody for entering into the activities with such enthusiasm. My former colleagues in the world of archives would be shocked at the smutty ideas those documents and photos inspired!
