I found this reference to the game Hot Cockles in a book, ‘The Sports and Pastimes of the People of England’ by one Joseph Strutt published in 1801.

Basically the game involves covering your eyes, putting your head in someone’s lap and then guessing who is smacking you from behind.  All totally innocent fun of course as the illustration in the book demonstrates!  Just goes to show spanking is nothing new.

There’s also a little rhyme about the game:

As a hot cockles once I laid me down,

And felt the weighty hand of many a clown,

Buxoma gave a gentle tap, and I

Quick rose, and read, soft mischief in her eye.
